En 1519, un puñado de casas frente al mar se convirtió en Panamá: la primera ciudad fundada por europeos en la costa del Pacífico de América. Por sus calles pasó la plata del Perú camino a Europa, y con ella comerciantes, oficios e idiomas de medio mundo. Fue, desde el principio, una ciudad de paso — como el país que nació con ella. In 1519, a handful of houses facing the sea became Panama: the first city founded by Europeans on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Silver from Peru passed through its streets on its way to Europe, bringing merchants, trades, and languages from half the world. From the very beginning, it was a city of passage — like the country born with it.

En 1671, tras el ataque del corsario Henry Morgan, la ciudad ardió. Sus vecinos la reconstruyeron a unos kilómetros de distancia, en lo que hoy conocemos como Casco Antiguo. Las piedras originales se quedaron donde estaban. In 1671, after the attack of the privateer Henry Morgan, the city burned. Its people rebuilt a few kilometers away, in what we now know as Casco Antiguo. The original stones stayed where they were.

Hoy, la Torre de la Catedral se recorta contra un horizonte de rascacielos: cinco siglos de historia en un solo encuadre.
